Diversion Method (US Patent #6,913,580)

     The Clean Collect® Blood Collection System uses a patented diversion method that prevents contamination of blood cultures. The diversion method reduces contamination rates by as much as 84% (see Research). The effectiveness of the diversion method has been demonstrated through clinical trials on over 8,000 patients. 

Line Drawn Blood Cultures

     The Clean Collect® Blood Collection System also includes a line draw management system to control catheter drawn blood cultures (or "line draws"). When combined with the diversion method, the complete system greatly increases the positive predictive value (PPV) of blood culture testing.  

Objectives

     The technical objective of Clean Collect® is to reduce contamination rates to as low as 0.8% and increase the positive predictive value of blood cultures to over 90%. This benefits patients by preventing unnecessary treatment and provides physicians with a more reliable diagnostic test for septicemia. The average cost of blood culture contamination for hospitals is $8,680 per incident.
