Costs of Blood Culture Contamination
Current research on the costs of blood culture contamination concludes that the average incident costs hospitals $8,680. This is based on studies from five teams of researchers at hospitals across the United States over 22 years and as recently as 2009. The studies examined a total of 7,775 patients. These studies compared the actual costs for patients with negative blood cultures against those with contaminated blood cultures.
